Ryan (4×5 Film)

“Fella says today, ‘Depression is over. I seen a jackrabbit, an’ they wasn’t nobody after him.’ An’ another fella says, ‘That aint the reason. Can’t afford to kill jackrabbits no more. Catch ’em and milk ’em an’ turn ’em loose. One you seen prob’ly gone dry.” ― John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath …. It just felt like a dust bowl kind of shoot.

Went out shooting with the musician Ryan Hayes. These were my first shots on my new (very old) Graflex Speed Graphic. I was testing it out — you never know with a new camera — and was very pleased with the results. I love film so much. And large format, well, it speaks for itself. I love these photographs, because they cover just a slight range of Ryan’s expression. Oh so serious and always thinking – but that last frame begins to capture the mischief and ever-present wit. He is a wonderful soul and an ultramultifaceted gem.

“Man, unlike any other thing organic or inorganic in the universe, grows beyond his work, walks up the stairs of his concepts, and emerges ahead of his accomplishments… The last clear definite function of men—muscles aching to work, minds aching to create beyond the single need—this is man.” j.s.
